Garden Journal: 29 November 2018

Trying out a new garden journal format so it's easier for me to pop back and reference things next year! Well, well, well. After admittedly getting a late start planting this season, I was elated when Kristian called me outside on this rainy morning after spotting lots of plants that had sprouted up overnight. We got some much-needed rain in Southern California last night, continuing into today, and it must have been just what the little seeds needed to pop up.

Looks like we have kale, cauliflower, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and some arugala that sprouted up. I was worried that because we planted a bit on the late side we might have messed up a bit, so I'm pretty relieved.

We also stumbled upon a rogue basil plant growing in our rocky garden area that has some Philodendron Selloum and some aloe plants. When our basil bolted a wee little seed must have blown over there and just decided to pop up, because I weeded only last Saturday and would have seen it! I glanced down, saw it and said hmmm that looks like basil. So I touched the leaves and sniffed my fingers, and sure enough it was a delightful basil scent. I don't know how well it will do in the winter, but I'm going to leave it there and let it do it's thing and see what happens.

So we direct sowed all the seeds on Saturday, November 24 and noticed sprouts on Thursday, November 29. Yay!
