Well, I started this post off by writing good morning but then I procrastinated for a fair bit and now it's no longer morning, so good afternoon! Before I dive into what we have in store this weekend, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention a really neat opportunity that I had recently. A gardener from Oregon saw the post about me on Humans Who Grow Food, and reached out saying he was going to be in the area, and wondered if he could come check out the garden and interview me for his YouTube channel. Always one to love chatting gardening, I said of course! Come on by! So he did, and the video is now live. It was a really fun discussion, and I'm glad to help spread the message of urban gardening in whatever space you have available, no matter how small or soil-less it may be.
Now, for weekend plans! The past two weekends we haven't had a chance to do anything garden related. We were in New York visiting Kristian's family, and then my dad came to town to visit. We have a wee bit of a backlog of things to tend to, and I'm excited to get my hands dirty.
First up: getting the four new beds hooked up with drip irrigation. This has been a long time coming, and I'm looking forward to not moving the hose from spot to spot, making sure everything gets a nice, deep watering. I much prefer setting the drip irrigation timer for ~20 minutes and letting it do its thing. I still have to hand water the in-ground bed, but that's manageable.
Next: make a potting bench! Right now, I use our patio table (that I got for free on the side of the road when we moved here!) and it works...fine. But from a storage perspective, we need a little something to contain all of our pots, tools, soil, gloves, etc. They're strewn about the garden usually, or shoved in a corner of the yard. And sometimes, I get bugs in my gardening gloves and it makes me do a crazy person dance around the yard, squealing until I get the gloves off and discover whatever it was hiding in there.
Just this morning, I found a great post on Reddit which I immediately showed Kristian. I think this is what we're going to go with!
It's just what I've been looking for! Ideally, I'd love to get a big vintage sink to fit in, and have a hole for the hose to run through, but that might be a little aggressive for this project at our rental. I have garden projects in two buckets: for now, and for our someday home. I think the kitchen sink plan is for our someday home.
And lastly, I'm going to be potting some extra pepper seedlings in 5 gallon buckets. I got a little over eager and now have more pepper seedlings than space to grow them, so I asked our local Ask, Borrow, Give group if anyone had spare buckets. Another of my favorite frugal tips! I always love avoiding buying plastic if I can help it, so I thought I'd ask first. Lo and behold, it worked! I saw this post from Urban Organic Gardener and figured I'd give it a whirl.
And I think that's it for this weekend. Famous last words, right?
